BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—A number of Birmingham-Southern student-athletes were recognized on Thursday, May 5, at BSC's annual Honors Day celebration, which recognizes students, faculty, and staff for their scholarly achievements as well as their leadership and service.
Men's Basketball senior John Crain (Hoover, Ala.) was awarded the Robert Hewlin Jackson Meritorious Scholarship Award, which recognizes students whose overall record places them at the top of their graduating class.
Women's Soccer senior Jessie Sperry (Powder Springs, Ga.) was honored with the William Legg Award, presented to a senior student-athlete who plans to attend graduate school, and was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the national academic honor society.
Senior baseball pitcher Kyle Royalty (Atlanta, Ga.) and senior football player Erez Kaminski were also elected to Phi Beta Kappa, joining a rich tradition of BSC student-athletes who have been elected to the organization over the years.
Women's Soccer senior Sarah Lombardi (Madison, Ala.) was the recipient of the Robert Hewlin Jackson Achievement Award, given to the graduating student who has shown the greatest academic improvement and made a distinguished record in his or her junior and senior years.
Men's Tennis junior David Goodloe (Brentwood, Tenn.) received the Turnipseed-Ikenberry Scholarship, awarded to rising juniors majoring in physics, mathematics, or history with outstanding academic achievement.
Additionally, women's lacrosse faculty liaison Kim Lewis, a Spanish instructor, received the President's Service Award, presented to members of the campus community who show commitment, character, service, and leadership.
Of BSC's over 230 graduting seniors this year, 69 are student-athletes. Commencement will be held Saturday, May 21, at 9 a.m. in Bill Battle Coliseum.
