BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – To complete reconstruction of the combined Interstate 20 and Interstate 59 route through downtown Birmingham, the elevated highway will be closed between the Elton B. Stephens/Red Mountain Expressway and Interstate 65. This will affect students, employees, and visitors to the BSC campus.
For the most current information, please check the Alabama Department of Transportation page www.5920bridge.com. There, the department offers maps and updates on the construction, which is expected to last 14 months. Additional updates are available on Twitter @5920bridge and on Facebook at @5920bridge. There is also an ALDOT traffic app, ALGO, available for download, and a hotline at (205) 346-5080.
As you look at the maps, be aware that BSC's direct highway access is at Exit 123 on 20/59, Arkadelphia Road/State Route 78. We are approximately one mile west of the shutdown.
A few notes for those planning on visiting campus in that time period:
- Access to campus will be unfettered for those traveling on I-20/59 eastbound from Tuscaloosa.
- Those traveling to campus southbound on I-65 (from northern Alabama and Tennessee) or northbound on I-65 (from Shelby County and areas farther south in Alabama) will be able to access I-20/59 westbound as per usual, but may encounter additional traffic, especially at peak times. Consider taking a detour such as Finley Boulevard to Arkadelphia Road from I-65 southbound or Third Avenue North/Third Avenue West to Arkadelphia Road from I-65 northbound. Arkadelphia Road takes you to the main Bruno Drive entrance to campus.
- Those traveling westbound on I-20 or I-59 through downtown Birmingham (from eastern Birmingham, Trussville, Oxford/Anniston, or Atlanta, etc.) should visit the ALDOT website or consult your GPS to work out an appropriate detour. ALDOT recommends that drivers use Carraway Boulevard to Finley Boulevard to Arkadelphia Road.
- Those traveling northbound to campus on the Elton B. Stephens/Red Mountain Expressway (also referred to as U.S. 31 to U.S. 280) will be detoured onto Third Avenue South to I-65 or onto Carraway Boulevard. See notes above for directions from those locations.
We understand the closures are an inconvenience to visitors to the city and to those of us who live here. Please be patient and don't let the detours stop you from bringing you to our beautiful campus!
