BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – With three games remaining in the conference schedule, the Birmingham-Southern Panthers increased their lead in the East Division to one and a half games today, defeating the Sewanee Tigers 58-41. With the victory, the Panthers improve to 18-3 on the season and 10-3 in SCAC-play. The Tigers’ woes continue, falling to 4-17 overall and 1-12 in league play.

The Panthers led the whole way, taking a 24-13 lead into the halftime. The Panthers then tacked on a 10-0 run to open the second half to go up 34-13 with 15:23 to play. The Tigers took a time out to stop the bleeding, but were still unable to score again until the 13:26 mark. The three points were returned on the next trip down the court thanks to a Kevin Kegarise swish from beside the SCAC logo.

Roger Williams led the Panthers offensively with 11 points and five rebounds on the day. Caleb Lee also pulled down a team-leading five rebounds. The Panthers shooting improved greatly in the second half, coming up to 41 percent from their halftime mark of just 36 percent. The Panthers’ long-range shooting more than doubled  to  4-of-23 from behind the arc for the half, after going a frigid 1-of-12 in the first half. BSC was 8-of-13 (62 percent) from the charity stripe. Sewanee shot 31 percent (12-of-39) from the field, 30 percent from three (7-of-23), and went 10-of-23 from the foul line for 44 percent.

The Panthers have just one home conference game remaining before closing out their SCAC schedule on the road. They host the Rhodes College Lynx next Saturday, February 13, at 5:00 p.m.
