BIRMINGHAM Ala. - A native of Greensboro, N.C., Kayla Auger is a senior at Birmingham-Southern College, and a defender on the women’s soccer team. She is an accounting major minoring in business and psychology. Auger would like to go to law school one day, but her immediate plans after graduation is to pursue a career in accounting.
“My dream is to go to law school,” she started. “But right now I want to focus accounting.” Auger has an accounting internship for the spring semester that she is hoping will turn into a job so she can stay in Birmingham after she graduates.
She attributes her academic success to her experience playing soccer. “Everything I’ve learned comes from being an athlete,” she said. “Now that I’m a senior, and when I go on job interviews, I can relate everything to being an athlete. It helps me be a team player, and has given me time management skills.”
It was at a college fair that a recruiter approached her for a campus visit at BSC. “After that visit, I was sold,” she said. “When I stepped on campus, I just fell in love with the school and I haven’t looked back since.” Another reason she chose BSC, was that she grew up in a small town. “It’s nice to live in a bigger city,” Auger added. “Birmingham is so exciting, and there are a lot of things to do here.”
For her, the best part of being a student at BSC is that she is "involved with everything not just soccer. I am a part of religious organizations, a sorority, academic organizations, at a bigger school, I wouldn’t be able to do that.” Some of the organizations that she is involved in are Reformed University Fellowship, Chi Omega and the Hilltop Society.
With her busy soccer and school schedules, Auger doesn’t get home a lot. “My parents come to visit me a lot,” she said. “They love to visit me because they love coming to a bigger city. I think it reminds them of when they were in college.”
Her favorite travel destination is Seattle. She said, “I worked there this summer at King County Metro doing research. I got to do all the touristy stuff. I really liked the city and would love to go back for another visit.” As for international travel, Auger said, “I want to travel to Italy one day because my grandparents live there. I would love to go to Sicily and find out more about how they grew up.”
When describing her pre-game routine, she said, “ever since my freshman year, I listen to Mercy by Kayne West. The first time I listened to it I had a really good game, and I’m really superstitious, so ever since I always listen to it.”
Auger’s favorite sports role model is Kyrie Irving, who plays basketball for the Boston Celtics. “He works hard and builds up his team and doesn’t take any of the glory,” she said. “That’s how I’ve always seen myself, is to be the consistent player who doesn’t want to be in the spotlight. I’m a hard worker; I’ve never been the fastest or best on my team, but I spend my time in the off season running and doing touch drills.” Auger credits her hard work off the field with helping her to be a great soccer player.
As for hobbies, she likes to play golf with her dad. “When I go home,” she started, “my dad and I go to the driving range. We do that together a lot. When I was younger, my dad always tried to teach me and my brothers how to play golf. We always just wanted to hit the ball, and now that I’m older, I can appreciate that.”
