BSC Baseball opens home slate with 3-2 win against Covenant
BIRMINGHAM—Birmingham-Southern baseball scored two runs in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie en route to a 3-2 win over Covenant College on Friday at Striplin Field.
The Panthers captured their third straight win to improve to 3-3 on the season while the Scots fell 3-2.
Covenant took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Scott Gillespie led off the inning with a double to left field and scored from third on a wild pitch.
BSC answered in the bottom of the second when Ethan Netherton singled and scored on a throwing error two batters later.
Netherton reached on an error and Trey Chambers singled to start the two-run fourth for the Panthers. Netherton came home on a wild pitch and Chambers scored on a David Bourbonnais RBI single to give BSC a 3-1 lead.
The Scots cut the lead to a run in the fifth when Chris Rollins had a lead-off double and scored on a Jonathan Carter double.
Bourbonnais led the BSC offensive attack with three hits and an RBI followed by Chambers with two hits and run scored. Netherton, Kevin Sheldon, Tanner McGill, and Evan Grovenstein collected a hit a piece.
Lewis Hammond worked six innings with six strikeouts while allowing two runs on three hits for the win. Miles Nordgren picked up his second save this season, allowing one hit over three scoreless innings with a strikeout.
Tyler Smith was the pitcher of record for the Scots, giving up thee runs on nine hits with three strikeouts to fall to 1-1. Brian Simons had a strikeout over three scoreless innings.
Birmingham-Southern and Covenant continue the three-game series with a double-header on Saturday at 1 p.m.
