No. 24 Panthers defeat Rhodes twice on the road

MEMPHIS, Tenn.—The 24th-ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team moved to 20-6 on the year and 5-0 in the SCAC today with two victories against Rhodes College in Memphis. The Panthers won by the scores of 3-2 and 6-4.

BSC went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning of game one on a run scored on an error, and then led 3-0 after the top of the fourth courtesy of a two-run home run by freshman David Bourbonnais, the first of his career. The Lynx answered with a two-run bomb of their own in the bottom of the fourth, but were unable to score again and BSC won 3-2.

Freshman right-hander Blake Stevens threw all seven innings, striking out 11 Lynx batters while giving up six hits. Senior Jon Walker was 2-3 at the plate and Bourbonnais was 2-4.

Game two started in a smiliar fashion, with BSC going up 1-0 in the top of the first, this time on an RBI single by Walker. The Panthers added another in the top of the third on a sac-fly by sophomore Evan Grovenstein.

Rhodes scored in the bottom of the fourth, and BSC responded by scoring twice more in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by junior Stephen Denton and a run scored on an error. The Panthers scored single runs in the seventh and ninth courtesy of another Lynx error and a sac-fly by junior Bruce Maxwell, going up 6-1. Rhodes tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three runs with two outs on the board before Bourbonnais came in for the final out - a swinging strikeout - to get the save, his second of the season.

Sophomore Lewis Hammond was the winning pitcher after starting and throwing 4.2 innings, recording six strikeouts and five hits. Sophomore Miles Nordgren also threw four innings and got four strikeouts while allowing four hits.

Denton, Maxwell and Walker were all 2-4 at the plate.
