BSC Baseball Comes Up Short In Extra Innings Against Huntingdon
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Tyler Blackwell drew a bases loaded walk in the top of the tenth inning to give Huntingdon College a 4-3 win over Birmingham-Southern (11-4) Saturday at Striplin Field.
The Hawks held a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the ninth when the Panthers tied the game. David Bourbonnais and Tanner McGill had one out singles. Bourbonnais would advance to third on an error and score on an Ethan Netherton sac-fly.
Grant Brown's infield single with one out started the HC tenth. Brown stole second to move into scoring position and Caleb Austin grounded out to advance Brown to third. Joseph Odom was intentionally walked and Trey Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases and set up Blackwell's walk.
BSC grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Taylor McCracken walked and Evan Grovenstein singled to open the frame. McCracken later scored on a throwing error and Grovenstein came home on Jacob Mayfield's triple.
Caleb Astin and Odom had RBI singles to help the Hawks tie the game at two in the third.
Bourbonnais (4-1) suffered the loss in relief of starter Blake Stevens. Bourbonnais gave up a run on two hits and had two strikeouts. Stevens struck out seven and gave up three runs on six hits through eight innings.
Nell Lawler (1-0) struck out four and allowed one run on two hits in three innings pitched to pick up the win.
Grovenstein and Stephen Denton led BSC with two hits.
In other action on Saturday, Illinois Wesleyan defeated No. 8 Adrian 6-4 in the first game and Huntingdon defeated IWU, 10-6 in game two.
Birmingham-Southern plays No. 8 Adrian College at 11 a.m. and Illinois Wesleyan at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at Striplin Field.
