Big Fifth Inning Helps Panthers To An 11-4 Win Over Oglethorpe

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore Blake Stevens struck out nine over eight innings to help Birmingham-Southern claim an 11-4 come from behind Southern Athletic Association win over Oglethorpe Friday at Striplin Field.

Stevens gave up four runs, three earned on five hits to earn the win and improve to 3-0 as BSC (12-7; 4-0 SAA) used a five-run fifth inning to erase a 4-3 deficit.

Tommy Allmon tripled home Braxton Marino and Evan Grovenstein had an RBI bunt single to score Taylor McCracken to get the fifth started. Jacob Mayfield delivered and RBI doubled and Ethan Netherton followed with an RBI single.

BSC would push three-runs across in the seventh for insurance. David Bourbonnais scored on an Allmon ground out and McCracken single scored Marino as BSC extended the lead to 11-4.

Mayfield finished 4-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Panthers at the plate.  MaCracken, Netherton and Brandon Perry had two hits apiece.  Netherton followed Mayfield with two RBI while McCracken, Grovenstein and Allmon each had an RBI.

Cory Leff suffered the loss for Oglethorpe to fall to 0-3. Leff pitched six innings and allowed eight runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts in relief starter Justin Thigpen. Thigpen gave up three runs, one earned on three hits in one inning of work.

BSC and Oglethorpe continue the series with single game on Saturday at 1 p.m. followed the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
