BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern (15-7) jumped out to an early big lead and then held on for 6-4 win over LaGrange College (11-12) Tuesday at Stiplin Field.
The Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the first and two in the second to stake to a 5-0 lead. Ethan Netherton, Tanner McGill and David Bourbonnais had RBI singles in the first. Jacob Mayfield slugged his third home run of the season to highlight the second.
LaGrange scored two in the third and two in the fifth to make it a one run game. Josh Shiver had an RBI single in the third and fifth innings.
A Mayfield sac-fly scored Taylor McCracken in the seventh to stretch the BSC lead to 6-4.
Starter Ethan Wilkinson worked a scheduled three innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits with a strikeout to improve to 1-1. Blake Yance allowed one hit in two scoreless innings for his fourth save.
Matt Steel started and was one of eight pitchers to take the hill for LC. Steel gave up three runs on three hits in one inning to take the loss and fall to 0-1.
BSC travels to Hendrix College for a three-game SAA series on Friday at 3 p.m. in Conway, Ark.
