CONWAY, Ark. – Birmingham-Southern (16-8; 7-1 SAA) stranded the tying and go ahead runs on base in the ninth inning as Hendrix College (10-14; 4-7 SAA) held on for a 3-2 Southern Athletic Association win on Saturday at UCA Bear Stadium.
The Panthers trailed 3-0 going before scoring a run in the eighth and ninth innings to pull within a run. Jacob Mayfield drew a walk and scored on a Tanner McGill single in the eighth but the Panthers would leave a runner in scoring position when the inning came to a close.
Zach Wagner delivered a pinch hit single to start BSC offense with one out in the ninth. Evan Grovenstein walked and Mayfield followed with a two out single to score Stephen Denton and cut the deficit to 3-2 and put runners at the corners with two outs. The game would end on the next at bat on a ground out to the pitcher.
Hendrix College built its 3-0 lead by scoring a run in the fourth and two in the seventh. Jacob Perschke singled in a run in the fourth and two runs scored on a Charlie St. Clair single in the seventh.
Warrior starter Nick Land scattered five hits with a strikeout over seven scoreless innings to earn the win and improve to 3-1. Daniel Imbro pitched the ninth with a strikeout to register his third save.
Ralls Pennington was BSC's pitcher of record, allowing one run on two hits in five innings to fall to 1-3.
BSC and Hendrix play the rubber-game of the series on Sunday at 12 p.m.
