ATLANTA, Ga.--No. 20 Birmingham-Southern scored 12 runs while holding Emory to only two hits en route to a 12-1 victory against the Eagles, Wednesday afternoon at Chappell Park in Atlanta, Ga.
The Panthers move to 21-8 with their fifth-straight win, while Emory falls to 13-12.
Junior Jeremy Hatley kicked off the scoring for BSC in the top of the first with an RBI double to bring sophomore Jacob Mayfield across the plate. The Eagles tied it up in the bottom of the first, scoring on a Panther error.
The tie didn't last long as BSC put up three more runs in the top of the second courtesy of an RBI single from freshman Taylor McCracken and a two-RBI single from junior Evan Grovenstein, and then scored twice in the top of the third after an Emory error to go up 6-1.
The lead expanded to 8-1 in the top of the seventh after RBI singles by sophomore Zach Wagner and senior Stephen Denton. BSC wrapped up the scoring in the top of the eighth with four more runs, and held Emory scoreless for the remainder of the game.
McCracken led BSC at the plate, going 3-4, while Hatley was 2-4 and Grovenstein was 2-6. Grovenstein, Denton, and Wagner led with two RBI apiece.
Freshman left-hander Kyle Royalty started on the mound and got the win, moving to 3-1 on the season. He gave up one hit and one walk with two strikeouts in three innings of work. Five other Panther hurlers also saw action, including sophomore David Bourbonnais with four strikeouts in his two innings.
BSC is at home this weekend, hosting a conference series against Rhodes College. Games are slated for Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Striplin Field.
