No. 20 BSC shuts out Rhodes, 4-0
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The No. 20 Birmingham-Southern baseball team gave up only three hits in a 4-0 shutout of Rhodes College, Saturday afternoon at Striplin Field.
The Panthers have now won two of three against the Lynx, moving to 23-8 overall and 13-1 in the Southern Athletic Association. Rhodes falls to 17-14 overall and 8-6 in the SAA.
The series concludes tomorrow with a 1 p.m. game.
BSC scored its first three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman Taylor McCracken reached base on an error and then moved to second on a balk, and junior Evan Grovenstein also reached on another error, which moved McCracken to third. Sophomore Jacob Mayfield then brought McCracken across the plate on a sacrifice fly-out. After another out, sophomore Jake Campbell was hit by a pitch, pushing Grovenstein to second, and both runners advanced on a passed ball. A single from sophomore David Bourbonnais plated Grovenstein, and a single from senior Brandon Perry brought Campbell home to put BSC up 3-0.
The Panthers scored once more in the top of the fifth on a Bourbonnais RBI during a double play that brought Hatley across the plate.
Hatley and Bourbonnais both recorded two of the Panthers' eight hits, with Hatley going 2-3 and Bourbonnais 2-4 with two RBI.
Junior Ralls Pennington started on the mound and got the shutout win to move to 3-3 on the year. He allowed three hits with two strikeouts in his seven innings of work. Bourbonnais threw the final two innings and didn't give up a hit.
