BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--Sophomore Jacob Mayfield has been named the Southern Athletic Association Baseball Player of the Week, the league announced today.
Mayfield, a catcher/outfielder from Gadsden, Ala., hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning on Sunday to score what would turn out to be the go-ahead runs against Rhodes, helping the 20th-ranked Panthers win 7-5 against the Lynx to sweep the series. For the week, Mayfield helped BSC go 4-0 with three wins against Rhodes as well as a mid-week victory against regional rival Emory on the road. He was 6-for-16 (.375) at the plate for the week, with three RBI and nine total bases. He had a .563 slugging percentage and a .450 on-base percentage, and was 2-for-2 on stolen bases. Defensively Mayfield recorded 15 putouts, playing two games in right field and two games at catcher.
