BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Led by freshman Zach Wingate with three RBI, the No. 23 Birmingham-Southern baseball team defeated Covenant, 10-3, in non-conference action Monday evening at Striplin Field.
The Panthers move to 12-2, while the Scots fall to 6-5.
Covenant scored the first run of the game when K.C. Simons walked with the bases loaded in the top of the second inning. The lead was short-lived, however, as BSC scored twice in the home half of the second. Wingate doubled to right-center to bring junior David Bourbonnais in from first and, three batters later, freshman Mason Tritt plated Wingate with a sac-fly to deep left field.
The Panthers added four more runs in the bottom of the third, beginning with one when Bourbonnais was hit at the plate with the bases loaded. Wingate had an RBI on a fielder's choice, senior Jeremy Hatley doubled to plate Bourbonnais, and Wingate scored on a wild pitch to bring the BSC lead to 6-1.
The Scots put up one more in the top of the fourth on a Simons RBI single, but BSC answered with four more in the bottom of the fourth as Mayfield hit a two-RBI double, and Bourbonnais and Wingate RBI singled to bringing the score to 10-2 in favor of the home team.
Covenant scored the final run of the day in the top of the fifth on an RBI single from Will Carlton.
Wingate was 2-4 at the plate with three RBI; Mayfield was also 2-4 and Hatley was 2-3. Junior Ben Hession (1-0) got the win in relief, throwing three innings with five strikeouts. Junior Paul Caudill started on the mound, and sophomore Wilson Jamison, freshman Mac Crawford, freshman Stephen Himic, and freshman Jack Rhodes all saw action as well. Crawford struck out all three batters in his inning of work.
David Lockwood led Covenant going 3-5 at the plate, and Simons led with two RBI. Spencer Smith (0-1) started and took the loss.
The Panthers are at home again on Wednesday, facing Hampden-Sydney at 4 p.m. at Striplin Field.
