BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The No. 6 Birmingham-Southern baseball team begins post-season play this Wednesday, May 13, facing Marietta College at 7 p.m. EDT in game three of the NCAA Division III South Regional at Loudermilk Field on the campus of Piedmont College in Demorest, Ga.
BSC earned an at-large bid, while Marietta won its 30th Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) championship to automatically advance to post-season play. The third-seeded Panthers enter the regional with a record of 34-10-1, while the fourth-seeded Pioneers stand at 28-16. Marietta is a six-time NCAA Division III national champion, having won titles in 2012, 2011, 2006, 1986, 1983, and 1981.
Fifty-six teams will begin regional play on Wednesday across eight different sites. All regionals will use a double-elimination format. Forty conference champions qualified automatically, with 16 at-large bids given out. Winners of the eight regional tournaments will qualify for the double-elimination championship at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wis., May 22-26/27.
The top seed in the South Regional is Southern Athletic Association champion No. 8 Rhodes, who defeated BSC twice last weekend to win the 2015 SAA title. Rhodes will face sixth-seeded No. 10 Methodist (32-8), an automatic qualifier out of the USA South Conference, on Wednesday at noon EDT. Second-seeded No. 20 Pacific Lutheran (30-12), an at-large selection, will take on fifth-seeded Emory (26-12), also an at-large selection, at 3:30 p.m. EDT.
