BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 3 Birmingham-Southern baseball team came back to defeat Berry College 6-3 Saturday morning in the first quarterfinal game of the 2017 Southern Athletic Association tournament. The Panthers (34-6) advance to the semifinal game Sunday where they will take on the winner of the second quarterfinal game at 1 p.m.
A.J. Hunt (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis University School) led the team offensively. He went 3-for-4 with one run. David Scott (Atlanta, Ga./Woodward Academy), Sam Roberts (Johns Creek, Ga./Blessed Trinity), and Will Toner (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS) each picked up two hits. Ryan Gaines (Dunwoody, Ga./Dunwoody HS) went the distance to earn 10th win of the season. He allowed just two earned runs and struck out four.
Berry opened scoring in the top of the second inning by putting two across. The Panthers responded in the bottom of the inning. With one out and the bases loaded, Scott singled to first and brought Drescher home for the Panthers first run. Rich Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS) then singled to center to plate the game-tying run.
Tyler Wise (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS) came up to the plate and drilled a double to left center that cleared the bases and gave BSC the 5-2 lead. The Vikings would get the next two batters to ground out to end the inning.
Berry pulled within two in the fourth on a single to short. But the Panthers would push the lead back out to three in the bottom of the seventh.
Roberts led off with a single to right field. With two outs on the board, he advanced to second on a single by Hunt. Toner then hit a single to deep left center that scored Roberts.
The Panthers were able to send three-up three-down in the eighth and ninth to secure the win. They will face the winner of the second quarterfinal game in tournament semifinals on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
