BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Rhodes College held on for the 4-3 win over No. 2 Birmingham-Southern baseball in the Southern Athletic Association championship game Sunday evening. The Panthers moved to 36-8 overall with the loss. The Lynx (25-19) earn the SAA's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament with the win.
Preston White (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis University School) and Tyler Hamel (Atlanta, Ga./Alpharetta HS) led BSC offensively. They both went 2-for-4. White also scored two of the Panthers three runs. Shirley received the loss after going five innings and striking out a game-high seven batters.
The Panthers opened scoring in the bottom of the second inning. White led off with a single to center that was followed up by a double from Sam Roberts (Johns Creek, Ga./Blessed Trinity). A.J. Hunt (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis University School) laid down the sacrifice bunt and White came across to score.
Rhodes responded with two runs in the top of the third. The score remained the same through the next three innings, before Rhodes would put two more
up in the seventh.
With one out in the bottom of the inning, Will Toner (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS) singled up the middle. He advanced to second on a single from Rich Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS) to left. Toner would come around to score on a single from Scott through the left side. The next two batters lined and flew out to the outfield to end the inning.
The Panthers held Rhodes scoreless in the eighth. White then led off with a double down the left field line. He moved to third on a fly out to right and came around to score when Jack Rhodes (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) doubled to right center.
The Lynx would get out of the trouble and hold the Panthers scoreless in the ninth to earn the win.
