BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team split its doubleheader with the Wheaton College Thunder on Saturday afternoon, taking game one 5-3 before falling 12-2 in the nightcap.
The story for game one was good pitching and timely hitting for the Panthers. Junior right-hander Jake Cook (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the win in the game, putting in seven solid innings and allowing just one earned run off four hits.
Three of BSC's five runs came in the fifth inning. Freshman Brian Williams (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) started off the inning with a single. He came around to score later in the inning when A.J. Hunt (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis Univ. School) singled to right field. Hunt and junior Richie Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS) would also score later in the inning off an RBI double by Tyler Wise (Hoover, Ala./Spain Park).
The Thunder attempted to make a comeback in the top of the eighth inning, scoring two runs to make it 5-3, but Misischia came in to shut down the Wheaton offense. He would stay in for the ninth inning to earn the save.
In game two, a seven-run second inning by Wheaton put the Panthers in a hole early and BSC could not get the bats going enough to get back in it.
After a 53-minute rain delay, the Thunder would add four more runs in the eighth inning to increase the deficit, giving them the final 12-2 lead.
Birmingham-Southern's two runs came in the first and third innings. Misischia scored the first run of the game, coming around on a Tyler Hamel (Atlanta, Ga./Alpharetta HS) sacrifice fly. The last person to cross home for BSC was Will Toner (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS), who was driven in on a Brian Williams single.
After Saturday's twin bill, Birmingham-Southern moves to 4-3 on the season. The Panthers will remain at home for their next game against Emory on Wednesday, Feb. 28. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
