BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team split its Southern Athletic Association doubleheader opener with Hendrix on Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers took game one of the series 6-2. BSC plated five of its six runs in the first three innings, putting the Warriors in a hole early.
Right-hander Jake Cook (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) continued his dominance on the mound with another stellar performance. The junior threw seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out four batters. Cook picked up the win to improve his record to 4-0 on the year.
Designated hitter Tyler Hamel (Atlanta, Ga./Alpharetta HS) led the Panthers at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a single, double and a home run, making him just a triple shy of the cycle. He accounted for half of BSC's total offense with three RBIs.
In game two, it took extra innings, but Birmingham-Southern fell 5-4 in the nightcap.
After taking a 3-0 lead in the second inning, Hendrix battled back to go ahead with a four-run inning in the top of the third.
The Panthers tied it up 4-4 after a Tyler Wise (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS) solo shot in the bottom of the sixth, sending the game into extra innings after a scoreless seventh.
The Warriors successfully played small ball in the top of the eighth to score the go-ahead, leaving BSC with just three outs. A leadoff hit-by-pitch put the Panthers in a good position to tie it up in the bottom half of the inning, but a failed steal attempt and good defense by Hendrix halted any BSC comeback effort.
After going 1-1 on Saturday, Birmingham-Southern moves to 6-5 on the season. The Panthers and Warriors will complete the three-game series on Sunday with first pitch at noon.
