BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team split its Southern Athletic Association doubleheader against Millsaps on Saturday, falling 14-4 in game one before rebounding to take game two 5-2.
Right-hander Jake Cook (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start in game one, pitching five and two-thirds innings. Cook gave up nine runs, five earned, off seven hits and struck out five batters.
The Panther defense had five errors in the loss.
BSC spread its four runs out over the course of the nine-inning game, picking up a run in the first, second, sixth and seventh innings.
Millsaps scored five runs in the third and added five more in the ninth to seal the 14-4 win for the visitors in game one.
Game two went much better for the Panthers. Right-hander John Michael Shirley (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright Prep) got the nod on the mound for BSC. He pitched four and two-thirds and after giving up the Majors' only two runs in the first innings, shut down opposing batters for the rest of his outing. Shirley finished the game with three strikeouts.
Richie Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS) came in in relief of Shirley and pitched the remainder of the game, earning him his second save of the season.
Freshman Preston Munns (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) was BSC leader at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Shortstop Dawson Pfost (Hickory Flat, Ga./Sequoyah HS) and second baseman Will Toner (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS) also went 2-for-3 in the game.
After the split, Birmingham-Southern sits at 13-10 on the season with a 5-6 record in the SAA. BSC and Millsaps will face off in the series rubber match on Sunday, March 25. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Striplin Field.
