ATLANTA – The Birmingham-Alabama baseball team swept Oglethorpe University over the weekend, grabbing both games in its Saturday doubleheader. The Panthers took game one 16-8 before winning game two 11-5.
In game one, BSC trailed 5-4 heading into the fourth but a five-run inning gave the Panthers a 9-5 advantage, a lead they never surrendered. BSC added to its lead with a four-run seventh and a three-run ninth inning.
Junior first baseman Tyler Wise (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS) was a key contributor to the BSC offense in game one, going 3-for-5 with two home runs, six RBI and three runs scored. He hit his first home run in the first inning, a two-run homer that gave Birmingham-Southern an initial 2-0 lead. His second homer came in the ninth, this one a three-run home run that gave BSC its final 16-8 lead.
In game two, the Panthers took the lead in the first and held it for the entire seven-inning game. BSC scored five runs in the first with two runs coming off a home run by second baseman Will Toner (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS).
BSC added to its lead with runs in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
After the series sweep, BSC improved to 21-14 overall and 11-10 in the Southern Athletic Association. The Panthers will travel to non-conference opponent Covenant for their next game on Tuesday, March 17.
