LAGRANGE, Ga. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team dropped its 2019 season-opener at LaGrange College on Friday afternoon, falling to the home side 7-2.
BSC fell behind early, allowing LaGrange to score two in the bottom of the first inning to go up 2-0. LaGrange would score two runs in the fourth and sixth innings and added one run in the fifth inning.
Birmingham-Southern scored its two runs off a Preston Munns (Marietta Ga./Lassiter HS) RBI double in the fourth and an Alfredo Granier (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents' Episcopal School) RBI single in the sixth.
Senior right-hander Jake Cook (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start on the mound and took the loss. He pitched four and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs, three earned, off seven hits with four strikeouts. Sophomore Tristan Harvin (Dothan, Ala./Houston Academy) finished out the game for BSC.
Birmingham-Southern will get the opportunity to avenge the loss in its next game. LaGrange comes to the Hilltop to face the Panthers in a doubleheader at Striplin Field on Saturday, Feb. 9. First pitch for the first game is slated for 1 p.m.
