SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team defeated No. 4-ranked Trinity 7-5 in game one of a three-game series on Friday night.
Senior Jake Cook (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS), who pitched four and one-third innings, got the start for the Panthers, but it was fellow senior Richie Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS) who picked up the win to move to 2-0 on the year.
The Tigers scored one run in the bottom of the first and held the lead until the top of the fifth when a Preston Munns (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) single scored Tyler Hamel (Atlanta, Ga./Alpharetta HS), who also homered in the game, to tie it up 1-1.
Trinity would add another run in the bottom fifth to retake the lead, but it was short-lived as the Panthers scored six runs over the next four innings.
Munns scored what would prove to be the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth inning, and Paul Williamson (Mobile, Ala./St. Luke's Episcopal School) came in for the final out to earn his first save of the year.
Birmingham-Southern will face Trinity in game two on Saturday at 1 p.m. The final game of the series will be Sunday, Feb. 17 at noon.
