BSC Loses Trinity Series Finale in Extra Innings

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Birmingham-Southern baseball lost a tight 5-4 game to the No. 4-ranked Trinity Tigers in extra innings on Sunday.

In a heartbreaking ending, the rubber match of the series went the other way after a walk-off single gave the hosts the win in the bottom of the 10th inning.

The Panthers and Tigers traded runs in the first inning before Trinity jumped up to a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second. Birmingham-Southern tied it back up in the next half inning after a Tyler Hamel (Atlanta, Ga./Alpharetta HS) single scored Brian Williams (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) and a Cory Price (Hoover, Ala./UAH) double scored Hamel.

The two teams would both plate one run in the top and bottom of the eighth inning to keep the game tied at 4-4. Then, after a scoreless ninth, the game headed into extras.

In the top of the 10th, the Panthers got a man into scoring position but could not capitalize. In the bottom of the inning, the Tigers put three hits on Robbie Lively (Helena, Ala./Southern Union) to score the game-winning run, handing Lively the loss.

Senior John Michael Shirley (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright Prep) got the start on the mound for the Panthers, pitching five innings and allowing three runs – two earned – off six hits while striking out five batters.

With the loss, Birmingham-Southern drops to 2-4 on the season. The Panthers return home to the Hilltop to host DePauw in their next game on Friday, Feb. 22 at 4:30 p.m.
