BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team swept Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Adrian College in two games on Saturday night.
The Panthers defeated the Titans 8-3 before knocking off the Bulldogs 9-2. With both wins under its belt, BSC improved to 8-4 in 2019.
Birmingham-Southern will be back at home on Monday, March 4 against Roanoke.
BSC 8, Oshkosh 3
The Panthers started hot with four runs scored in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by a Tyler Hamel (Atlanta, Ga./Alpharetta HS) two-RBI double. BSC added its remaining runs with a run in the second, two runs in the fourth and capped its scoring with another run in the eighth.
Senior right-hander John Michael Shirley (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright Prep) got the start on the mound, throwing five innings and allowing one unearned run off three hits, while striking out five batters. Shirley earned the win with him performance, his second win of the season.
A committee of relievers finished out the game for the Panthers, striking out a combined four batters and allowing six hits.
Offensively, three BSC players led the team with multi-hit games. Senior Tyler Wise (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS) was 4-of-5 from the plate and had three RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Brian Williams (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) went 3-of-4 and crossed home plate four times. And sophomore Cole Steadman (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian) ended the game 2-of-5 with two runs scored.
BSC 9, Adrian 2
Four-run innings in both the third and fourth propelled the Panthers to the nightcap win over the Bulldogs.
A throwing error allowed BSC's first run of the third inning but an RBI single by Tyler Wise scored Cole Steadman. A wild pitch brought in another run and a Preston Munns (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) RBI double scored Wise from second base.
In the next inning, Wise accounted for three of the four runs in the fourth, knocking in two teammates with a single and coming across later in the inning off a Munns two-RBI single.
Wise was BSC's leader offensively, going 3-of-4 from the plate with two runs scored and three RBI.
Junior Andy Hammond (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start on the bump. He got the win by pitching six innings, allowing one unearned run off six hits and striking out four. It was Hammond's first win from the mound this season.
