Panthers Split Doubleheader with Lynx

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team split its Southern Athletic Association home doubleheader against Rhodes on Saturday afternoon, winning 6-5 before falling to the Lynx 10-2.

Game 1
The Panthers came back from a four-run deficit in Saturday's first game to win. After falling down 4-0, BSC scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead and held on to the lead to get the 6-5 win.

Senior Jake Cook (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start for the Panthers and pitched six innings, allowing four runs off five hits and striking out three batters. BSC's six runs in the sixth put Cook in position to get his fourth win of the year.

In the sixth inning, a couple walks and a single put men in scoring position early. A sacrifice fly by Brian Williams (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) and another walk scored BSC's first two runs. With the bases still loaded, it was Preston Munns (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) grand slam that scored BSC's four remaining runs and capped the scoring for the home side.

The Lynx managed to score one more run in the eighth, but senior Richie Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS) came in for the final three innings and finished out the game to earn his second save of the season.

With the win, the Panthers extended their winning streak to 13 games.

Game 2
Birmingham-Southern's winning streak was ended in the final game of the day as the Panthers fell 10-2, their most lopsided loss of the season.

Senior John Michael Shirley (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright Prep) got the start for the seven inning game, pitching four and a third innings, allowing four runs off six hits and striking out six batters. He ended up on the hook for the loss.

Four other pitchers came in in relief of Shirley for the remaining two and two-thirds innings and combining to allow six runs off four hits. Six of Rhodes's 10 runs came in the top of the sixth inning.

BSC's two runs came off an RBI single by Will Evans (Peachtree City, Ga./Starrs Mill HS) in the second and a solo home run by Tyler Hamel (Atlanta, Ga./Alpharetta HS) in the fourth.

With the loss, the Panthers dropped to 15-5 overall and 4-1 in the SAA.

BSC and Rhodes will wrap up the series on Sunday with the first pitch of game three set for 1 p.m.
