CONWAY, Ark. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team dropped its Southern Athletic Association series finale against Hendrix 7-4 on Sunday afternoon.
Tied up at 4-4, the Panthers allowed three runs in the home half of the eighth inning, giving the Warriors the 7-4 victory late in the game.
BSC jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first two innings when a solo homer by Cole Steadman (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian HS) in the first and RBIs by A.J. Hunt (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis University School) and Luke DePiero (Atlanta, Ga./Walker HS) in the second inning put the Panthers ahead.
BSC's fourth run came in the top of the eighth off an RBI single by Tyler Wise (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS).
A two-RBI double by the Warriors and a throwing error by the Panthers in the bottom eighth were enough to give the home side the win in the end.
Junior Andy Hammond (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start on the mound for BSC, pitching four and one-third innings, allowing three runs off six hits. Reliever Richie Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS) ended up on the hook for the loss, his first of the season, as he allowed three runs—two earned—off two hits in the eighth inning.
Birmingham-Southern drops to 17-8 overall and 5-4 in the SAA. The Panthers will host the Huntingdon Hawks at Striplin Field for their next game on Tuesday, March 26.
