Panthers Take Two From Stormy Petrels, Earn Series Sweep

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team took two from the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels on Saturday to earn the Southern Athletic Series sweep.

Game 1
The Panthers took game one of the doubleheader 11-2, putting the hurt on late with seven runs scored in the eighth inning.

John Michael Shirley (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright Prep) started the game but left in the first inning due to injury. Sophomore righty Tristan Harvin (Dothan, Ala./Houston Academy) filled in and pitched five and one-third innings, allowing two runs off six hits while striking out six. Harvin's performance earned him the win, his second of the season.

Sophomore outfielder Cole Steadman (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian) and sophomore Brian Williams (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) led BSC offensively. Steadman had a team-high three hits and scored two runs while knocking a run in.

Williams finished the game 1-of-4 from the plate, drawing a walk, scoring two runs and adding two RBI.

Game 2
BSC shutout the Stormy Petrels 8-0 in the series finale, scoring seven runs in the third inning and capping the scoring with a single run in the sixth inning.

All eight runs were scored by different Panthers in the game and seven different Panthers got hits. Senior Tyler Wise (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS) accounted for half of BSC's run tally with a three-RBI triple that opened up the scoring in the third. He also came around to score himself in the inning.

Defensively, BSC allowed only three hits. Junior Andy Hammond (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start and pitched four shutout innings, allowing two hits while striking out three batters. He earned the win to improve to 4-2 on the year.

Senior Richie Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS) and junior Paul Williamson (Mobile, Ala./St. Luke's Episcopal School) came in in relief. Misischia tossed two innings, allowing just one hit while Williamson came in in the final inning to close out the game.

 

After the sweep, Birmingham-Southern's record stands at 23-10 overall and 10-5 in the SAA. The Panthers will travel to Centre for their next SAA series on April 13-14.
