BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team advanced to the semifinal round of the 2019 Southern Athletic Association, defeating Oglethorpe 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers came from behind to win, scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to walk-off. It was the second straight walk-off win for BSC in the SAA tournament.
An Oglethorpe error scored senior Oakley Starling (Brentwood, Tenn./LaGrange College) from third base to tie the game at 3-3, and then a Cole Steadman (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian) RBI single into left field sent in the winning run.
The Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after RBIs by Tyler Hamel (Atlanta, Ga./Alpharetta HS) and Will Toner (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS). BSC was held scoreless after the first until the Panthers came back from 3-2 down to win the game.
John Michael Shirley (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright Prep) got the start on the mound for the Panthers, pitching five and two-thirds innings and allowing three runs off seven hits. But it was junior left-hander Hanan Mauldin (Florence, Ala./Florence HS) who got the win, tossing three and one-third shutout innings to close it out.
Birmingham-Southern will face the winner of game five in the SAA semifinals on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
