CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – No. 15 Birmingham-Southern baseball opened its first ever NCAA Division III College World Series appearance with a 6-1 win over Heidelberg University late Friday night. BSC (40-13) will take on Johns Hopkins University in the bracket semifinals tomorrow night at 7:45 p.m. CT.
Brian Williams (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) and Cole Steadman (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian) earned three hits a piece in the win to lead the team offensively. Steadman also finished with three RBI.
With the win, the Panthers set a single-season wins record in the programs Division III era.
BSC was the visitor and took advantage of batting first. Williams sent a ball screaming through the left side on a full count. He moved to third when Tyler Wise (Hoover, Ala./Spain Park HS) doubled to left field, and slid home for the first run of the game on a groundout at first. With runners on the corners, Hunt singled to second base, scoring Wise from third and giving BSC the 2-0 lead.
They put another run across in the second inning. Steadman singled to center on a full count and moved to second on a wild pitch. A clean single to deep right field by Williams brought Steadman around.
BSC's biggest inning came in the top of the fifth. With bases loaded and two outs, cleared the bases with a double to left field, pushing the Panthers lead to 6-0.
Shirley held Heidelberg hitless clear into the fourth inning. And the Panthers defense kept them off the board until the seventh. Hammond pitched three strong innings to help BSC secure the win and advance.
