Panthers stay unbeaten with 43-7 rout of Ave Maria University
NAPLES, Fla.—The Birmingham-Southern football team moved to 3-0 on the season with a 43-7 victory against Ave Maria University in Naples, Fla., Saturday.
The Gyrenes dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
Junior tailback Shawn Morris (Pensacola, Fla.) recorded two of the Panthers' touchdowns on the day. Sophomore wide receiver Tyler Johnson (Milton, Fla.) also had a touchdown, as did junior safety Andrew Shannon (Trussville, Ala.), who returned an interception to the end zone.
The score was 34-7 at the half, with BSC adding nine points in the second half, including a safety in the fourth quarter.
"Overall I'm happy with the win today," Head Coach Eddie Garfinkle said. "This was Ave Maria's first ever home football game, so we knew they would be ready to play, and that the fans would be excited and it could potentially be a tough environment.
"Although I do feel like we played a little sloppy, our defensive effort in the second half was good. We had a chance to let our number two guys get some reps in, which will be beneficial as we go forward."
