No. 18 Panthers open Southern Athletic Association play in Memphis against Rhodes, Saturday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—No. 18 Birmingham-Southern will travel to Memphis, Tenn., on Saturday to face Rhodes College at 1 p.m. to open Southern Athletic Association play.

The Panthers are 3-0 on the season heading into the weekend, having most recently defeated Ave Maria University, 61-14, at home this past Saturday. The Lynx are 2-0 with wins against Washington University St. Louis and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, both at home.

BSC is 3-2 all-time against Rhodes, including a 54-0 home win last season. The last time Rhodes defeated BSC was Sept. 20, 2008, in a 35-7 victory in Memphis.

Senior quarterback Jimmy Stainback leads the BSC offense with 480 passing yards and five touchdown passes. Junior tailback Joseph Moultrie leads on the ground with 263 rushing yards and five touchdowns, and sophomore Sam Vermilyea leads with 167 receiving yards and three touchdown catches. On defense, senior safety Andrew Shannon leads with 16 tackles, including 10 solo tackles.

Quarterback Blake Box leads the Lynx with 148 passing yards, while running back Dane Wilson leads with 316 rushing yards and three touchdowns. All of Rhodes' touchdowns have been on the ground, and the Lynx have recorded 501 rushing yards and 148 passing yards. Linebacker Joseph Raby leads the Lynx defense with 21 tackles, followed by defensive back Justin Toliver with 20.

Saturday's game will be the first-ever SAA game for both teams. The brand new conference was created when Birmingham-Southern, Rhodes, and five other former Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schools teamed up with Berry College to form the new league.
