MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Birmingham-Southern College football team dropped its Southern Athletic Association opener Saturday afternoon 35-9 on the road at Rhodes College.
Ryder Andrews (Homewood, Ala./Homewood HS) went 3-for-5 in field goals, hitting from 22, 25, and 27 yards out.
Trevor Oakes (Somerville, Ala./Hartselle HS) made his debut at quarterback. He finished with a team-best 155 passing yards including a game-long 48 yard completion. Kerrigan Pennington (Wagerville, Ala./Washington County HS) led on the ground with a game-high 86 yards and Jamal Watkins (Hampton, Ga./Dodge City CC) earned a game-high 193 receiving yards. Watkins also had 73 return yards on the day.
Defensively, Sy Butler (Childersburg, Ala./Childersburg HS) finished with a game-high eight tackles, six solo. Cole Murphy (Gaylesville, Ala./Gaylesville HS), who also had six solo tackles, earned seven total, respectively, including a sack for a loss of nine yards. The linebacker also grabbed an interception, the first of his career.
BSC returns home for its next game. The Panthers take on Trinity (Tex.) on Saturday, Sept. 30 in Krulak Stadium. Kickoff is set for noon.
