BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the past three years, Birmingham-Southern football has participated in Be The Match to help recruit potential bone marrow donors. This year, the Panthers partnered with the Andy Talley Bone Marrow Foundation for a "Get in the Game. Save a Life." event and recruited 54 new donors to the Be The Match Registry.
Because of their efforts, over 16,000 new members were added this year, improving the chances to save a life. BSC has been responsible for 399 new donors and two transplants in three years of participation.
According to Be The Match, 14,000 patients every year diagnosed with diseases need marrow transplants to survive. GITG has registered nearly 100,000 donors since 2008. Of those individuals, 500 were identified as a patient's genetic match.
