BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The National Football Foundation announced its semifinalists for the 2018 William V. Campbell Trophy and Birmingham-Southern football senior Matthew Byers (Pelham, Ala./John Carroll Catholic HS) made the cut.
According to the NFF, the Campbell Trophy "recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation." Candidates must by a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2, outstanding football ability, and demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.
Byers was named CoSIDA Academic All-District last season and D3football.com team of the week honors. He finished 2017 ranked nationally in three categories, including ninth in passes defended and 20th in interceptions. This year, he is ranked nationally in interceptions per game and sits second in the league.
