BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern football team scored eight touchdowns en route to its 57-41 conference win over Hendrix College at Krulak Stadium Saturday afternoon. With the win, BSC (3-2) improved to 1-2 against Southern Athletic Association opponents.
Trevor Oakes (Somerville, Ala./Hartselle HS) threw for 400 yards, completing 26-of-39 with zero interceptions and three touchdowns. Cole Marell (Bonifay, Fla./Holmes County HS) and Buddy Dowd (Dothan, Ala./Northview HS) each had 100 yard days. Marell earned a game-high 133 receiving yards with a touchdown on five catches. Dowd went 103 including a touchdown on eight catches. On the ground, Robert Shufford (McKenzie, Ala./McKenzie HS) led with a game-high 128 yards. He averaged 8.5 yards per carry, never rushed for a loss, and scored a touchdown. Shufford finished with a team-best 138 all-purpose yards. Zack Seay (DeFuniak Springs, Fla./Freeport HS) tied a program record with three rushing touchdowns. He finished with 92 net yards on the ground.
Defensively, DJ Albright (Alpharetta, Ga./Milton HS) earned a game-high eight tackles, six solo. On the line, Reggie Norwood (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood International Charter School) had a dominant day. He finished with five tackles, all solo, one sack, two tackles for a loss of eight yards, and forced a fumble. Three corners earned two pass breakups each. And linebacker Sy Butler (Childersburg, Ala./Childersburg HS) grabbed a crucial interception in the third quarter and returned it 13 yards. He would finish with seven tackles, three solo, including a tackle for a loss of one yard.
On special teams, Ryder Andrews (Homewood, Ala./Homewood HS) punted for 149 yards, placing two inside the 20. His longest was 53 yards. On kickoffs, he went a game-high 335 yards, averaging 55.8 yards per kick. Tavion Fleming (Franklin, Tenn./Centennial HS) earned a game-high 85 return yards. His longest on the day was 64 yards.
The Panthers hit the road next. They take on Sewanee next Saturday, Oct. 13. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
