NEW ORLEANS, La.—Junior Kevin Kegarise scored 24 points to lead four players in double figures in helping the No. 22 Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team defeat Southern Maine, 85-73, in the Big Easy Challenge at the Alario Center in New Orleans, Thursday afternoon.
The Panthers move to 9-1, while USM falls to 6-5 with its third straight loss.
Kegarise shot 9-of-11 from the field and an impressive 6-of-8 from three-point range. Senior Jasen Jonus also added 15 points, and junior Zac Richards and sophomore Griffin Schamp recorded 10 points each. Richards also led on the boards with seven rebounds, and senior Blaise White led with four assists.
USM got off to a strong start, leading the Panthers for the majority of the first half and going up by as much as nine, but BSC put together a 12-2 run down the stretch to lead 35-30 at halftime. BSC increased its lead even further early in the second half, out-scoring the Huskies 22-8 in the first six minutes of the second half to go up 57-38. The Panthers maintained a comfortable margin for the remainder of the game, eventually winning 85-73.
BSC faces Clark University tomorrow in the Challenge at 6 p.m. CST.
