BSC Men Defeat Berry College In Regular Season Finale

ROME, Ga. – Birmingham-Southern overcame a 15-point first half deficit to earn a Southern Athletic Association road win over Berry College 53-50 Sunday at the Cage and secure the No. 3 seed in next week's conference tournament.

The Panthers (18-7; 10-4 SAA) closed the regular season with three-straight wins and will play No. 6 see Hendrix College on Friday at 8 p.m. in Danville, Ky.  Berry (5-20; 2-12 SAA) will play top seeded Centre College in the opening round. Game times are to be announced. 

BSC shot 27 percent, making 8-of-29 shot attempts, and was 0-for-6 from behind the arc while Berry shot 46 percent, going 12-of-26. BSC turned it around in the second half shooting 41 percent (10-of-24) while holding the Vikings to 26 percent.

A Mac Whalen jump shot gave Berry a 22-8 lead at 9:33 mark and Jonathan Abrams' free-throw gave the Vikings their biggest lead at 25-10 with 5:40 to go in the first half.

Larry Thomas made a free throw on end of a 13-3 run to rail 28-23 at intermission. Thomas led the Panthers with 18 points and had six rebounds for his fifth straight game in double figures.

The Panthers would take a 31-30 lead on a pair of Thomas free throws,which was one of seven ties and six lead changes.

BSC would use a small 4-0 spurt to take a 51-47 lead following Blaise White's two free throws with 15 seconds left.Abrams kept the Vikings hopes alive dialing up a long three to cut the deficit to 51-50 with 10 seconds left.

Jason Holland gave BSC a 53-50 lead with nine seconds remaining as BSC defended two 3-point attempts in the final five seconds to hold on for the win.

Zac Richards followed Thomas with 14 points and four rebounds as the only other Panther to score in double figures. Alex Avery collected a game-high nine rebounds.

Devan Bruce scored 11 points and had six rebounds and Abrams finished with 10 points for the Vikings.
