LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team fell on the road to the Covenant Scots 86-82 on Tuesday afternoon, dropping the Panthers to 1-3 on the season.
BSC started off the game with the lead and held it through most of the first half, taking as much as an eight-point lead at one point in the half. Covenant would go on to cut the Panther advantage to 23-21 with just over seven minutes left before halftime and then tie it up at 24 with 5:42 to go before the break.
The Scots took their first lead of the game, a 30-28 advantage, with 2:48 left before the half and would keep it until the end of the period. At halftime, Birmingham-Southern trailed 43-37.
Sophomore forward Kaden Moore (Gadsden, Ala./Hokes Bluff HS) led the Panthers in the first half with seven points, two blocks and five rebounds.
In the second period, BSC mounted a comeback. After going down 50-43 with 16:48 to play, the Panthers went on a 12-2 run to go ahead 55-52 with 13:14 remaining. Moore made the game-tying shot before freshman guard Terence Butler (Winder, Ga./Winder-Barrow HS) hit the go-ahead jumper.
The Panthers and Scots battled back and forth for the remainder of the game which saw eight ties and five lead changes. However, in the end, it would be Covenant that would see the last of those lead changes. Up 81-80 with 1:15 left, the Scots closed out BSC with a small 5-2 run to secure the victory.
Senior forward Harrison Deneka (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) led the Panthers with 15 points and six rebounds. Moore finished the game with 11 rebounds and three blocks. Point guard Zach Allison (Pelham, Ala./Wallace State) also hit double digits in scoring. The junior transfer finished with 14 points and added three assists.
Birmingham-Southern will be on the road once again for its game against Huntingdon on Monday, Nov. 27. Tipoff for BSC's game against the Hawks is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
