BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team cruised past Millsaps College at home on Tuesday night, opening up Southern Athletic Association play with a big 81-58 win over the Majors.
Sophomore guard Calvin Bak (Muscle Shoals, Ala./Muscle Shoals HS) led the Panthers with 12 points and added two assists. The team's leading scorer, senior forward Harrison Deneka (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS), was the second-leading scorer with 11 points. Deneka also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and recorded a block.
Freshman forward Ben Spence (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) came off the bench to score 10 points and had four rebounds.
There were four lead changes in the game but all came early on. It did not take BSC long to get into a rhythm against the Majors. With just under 15 minutes to go in the first half, freshman guard Matt Gonda (Roswell, Ga. / Roswell HS) hit a three-pointer to give the Panthers a 13-9 lead. From there, Birmingham-Southern went on a 30 to 15 run which gave the home team a 43-24 lead at the half.
In the second half, BSC continued to outplay Millsaps and finished strong, outscoring the Majors 38 to 34 in the final 20 minutes.
The Panthers finished the game shooting 45.9 percent from the field and hit 13 of 25 shots from beyond the arch.
The win improves BSC's record to 4-8 overall and 1-0 in the SAA. Birmingham-Southern's next game will be on the road against Centre on Friday, Jan. 5. Tipoff for the game is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
