BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team improved to 2-2 in Southern Athletic Association play on Friday night, taking down Hendrix College 104-92.
The first half, which saw 6 lead changes, was a hard-fought, back-and-forth battle between the Panthers and Warriors until BSC's Matt Gonda (Roswell, Ga./Roswell HS) hit a lay-up that started the home team on a 16-8 run to the break. At halftime, the Panthers had a 10-point, 51-41 lead.
The second half was more one-sided, favoring Birmingham-Southern. The Panthers took their 10-point halftime lead and extended it to 22 points with 10:08 left to play. The Warriors managed to cut BSC's lead to nine with just under five minutes to play, but the visitors never got any closer than that.
By the time the final buzzer sounded, the Panthers had a 12-point lead, securing the 104-92 victory.
Other leaders for BSC were senior Harrison Deneka (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) with eight rebounds and junior Zach Allison (Pelham, Ala./Wallace State Community College) who added six assists.
Birmingham-Southern returns to Bill Battle Coliseum on Sunday, January 14 to face the Lynx of Rhodes College. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
