JACKSON, Miss. – The Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team dropped its Southern Athletic Association opener at Millsaps College on New Year's Day, falling to the Majors 78-67.
With the loss, the Panthers move to 6-5 (0-1 SAA) on the season.
Sophomore forward Ben Spence (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) led BSC with 19 points and 13 rebounds to earn the double-double.
Forward Christian Stewart (Irondale, Ala./Shades Valley HS) scored 11 points, the second-most for the Panthers, and also had five steals.
Birmingham-Southern was on top of Millsaps 33-27 at the halftime break, but the Panthers were outscored 51-34 in the final 20 minutes.
The Panthers return to the Hilltop for their next game, the conference home opener against Oglethorpe, on Friday, Jan. 4. The BSC women's basketball team will tip at 6 p.m. before the men tip off at 8 p.m.
