BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team fell to Centre College on Sunday afternoon, dropping an 84-74 decision in Bill Battle Coliseum.
The Panthers started the game hot, jumping out to an 11-point lead midway through the first half and increased it to 14 points with 6:22 to go. But the visitors recovered and went on a run in the final five minutes to take a 41-40 lead into the break.
In the second half, BSC's shooting cooled off and turnovers plagued the Panthers. BSC's shooting percentage dropped from 61 percent to 50 percent in the second half and nine of the Panthers' 15 turnovers came after halftime.
Centre went on to outscore BSC 43-34 in the final 20 minutes and hand the Panthers their third conference defeat of the season.
Senior point guard Zachary Allison (Pelham, Ala./Wallace State CC) led the Panthers with 15 points and five assists. Sophomore Matt Gonda (Roswell, Ga./Roswell HS) led the team in rebounds with seven.
With the loss, Birmingham-Southern falls to 10-7 overall and 4-3 in the Southern Athletic Association. The Panthers will be on the road for their next four games, traveling to Sewanee for their next game on Friday, Jan. 25.
BSC will be back at home against Rhodes College on Friday, Feb. 8 at 8 p.m.
