BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team closed out its regular season at Bill Battle Coliseum on Saturday afternoon, falling to Southern Athletic Association foe Millsaps 79-57.
The Panthers were outscored by the Majors in both halves of play and could not get a groove going on the offensive end, especially from beyond the three-point line, where they were 4-of-24 for the game.
After trailing early, Birmingham-Southern went on a run midway through the first half, gaining the lead over Millsaps and extending it to as five points with 8:15 left before halftime. But the Panthers could not hold onto the slim lead and went into the break down 41-35 to the Majors.
Shooting woes continued to plague the Panthers in the second half as they shot just 18 percent from the field and were outscored 38-22 in the final 20 minutes.
Saturday also served as Senior Day for the men's basketball team. Four seniors – Zach Allison, Andrew Praytor (Oak Grove, Ala./Oak Grove HS), Aidan Waldrum (Nashville, Tenn./Hendersonville HS) and Rich Yancey (Newnan, Ga./The Heritage School) – were recognized prior to the start of the game.
Birmingham-Southern will travel to top seed and host Centre College in Danville, Ky., for the SAA Tournament. The Panthers, who are the fifth seed, will face the No. 4 seed Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels in the conference quarterfinals on Friday, Feb. 22.
