JACKSON, Miss.—Sophomore Spencer Honey shot a final round 75 to finish ninth individually and lead the Birmingham-Southern men's golf team to seventh as a team at the Millsaps Collegiate this week, held at the Deerfield Course at Colonial Country Club in Madison, Miss.
"We struggled as a team out there over the last two days, but we finished with some strong final holes," Head Coach Jason DeJiacomo said. "We'll need to put in some hard work over the off-season, both mentally and physically, to get this team to reach their potential."
Honey's overall 154 (79-75) placed him ninth overall, edging senior Michael Wallace (79-77-156, t-17th) for top spot among BSC's players. The rest of the BSC team finished as follows: freshman Jonathan Cook, 80-78 for a 158 total; freshman Patrick Newsom, 78-81-159; sophomore Nick Vick, 79-82-161.
The Panthers held their ground remaining in the seventh place position after both rounds, shooting 315-311-626. BSC finished just seven strokes behind third-place DePauw and five back of Millsaps.
Everyone was chasing Cumberland University (TN) who won the tournament going away by 22 strokes.
The tournament closed out the Panthers' fall season; they return to action for their spring season March 1-2 at the Callaway Collegiate at Callaway Gardens Resort in Pine Mountain, Ga.
