Men's Lacrosse announces captains for 2012 season
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Seniors Chris Clarke, Nathan DeRosa, Jacob McPherson, and DJ Ward have been named captains for the 2012 Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team, Head Coach Andy Bonasera announced today.
"These four senior captains, along with the 11 other seniors on the team, were a part of the inaugural class of lacrosse recruits on this campus three years ago, who came to the Hilltop to help build this team," Bonasera said. "They have all been leaders of the team from the very start and I am grateful for their continued commitment to this team and campus. These four senior captains specifically embody the spirit of our team with a passion for the game and a commitment to their education. They have had success on and off the field from the moment they stepped on campus and have improved the team in each of their years here."
Clarke, a defenseman from Atlanta (Decatur High School), has lead the team in ground balls in each of his three seasons with the team. Last season he accumulated 67 ground balls and caused 17 turnovers, and scored two goals with two assists. Clarke has a career total of 260 ground balls and 63 caused turnovers. He helped lead a defensive unit towards a league-best 176 caused turnover last season, while also giving up only 5.57 goals per game in conference play. Clarke was twice named to the SCAC Academic Honor Roll and will graduate this spring with a biology degree and plans to attend dental school.
DeRosa, a defenseman from Peachtree City, Ga. (McIntosh High School), has been an emotional leader of the team and defensive unit in each of his three seasons as a Panther. He is a two-time member of the SCAC Academic Honor Roll, has been a Resident Advisor on campus the past two school years, and is an economics major set to graduate this spring.
McPherson, a midfielder from Katy, Texas (Cinco Ranch High School), was a First-Team All-SCAC midfielder in 2010 and a Second-Team All-SCAC midfielder last season. In 2011, he accumulated 28 goals, 11 assists, and had 40 ground balls. McPherson has a career total thus far of 81 goals and 25 assists. He is a three-year member of the SCAC Academic Honor Roll, and will graduate this spring with a degree in business administration.
Ward, a midfielder from Peachtree City, Ga. (McIntosh High School), has been a starting midfielder and attackman each of his years on the Hilltop, leading the team in assists each season. Last season he accumulated 18 goals and 20 assists, and now has a career total of 55 goals and 64 assists. Ward is an Urban Environmental Studies major set to graduate this spring.
The Panthers kick off the 2012 campaign on Feb. 12 against Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Va.
