Men's Lacrosse downs Berry on the road, 11-5

ROME, Ga.—The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team went on the road today and picked up its first win of the 2012 season, defeating Berry College 11-5.

The Panthers are now 1-1, while the Vikings fall to 0-1.

BSC scored the first two goals of the game, and Berry responded with two goals to tie it up 2-2 by the end of the first quarter.

The Panthers stepped it up and scored four goals in the second quarter, leading 6-2 at the half, and then scored three straight goals in the third quarter to go up 9-2.

In the fourth quarter, the Vikings opened with three straight goals to cut it to 9-5, but BSC scored twice more down the stretch while holding Berry scoreless for the 11-5 victory.

Freshman Erik Klein led with four goals, while junior Brennan Ott had three and junior Nicco DeRosa had two. Senior Jacob McPherson and sophomore Michael Sanicola also had one goal apiece.

Senior Chris Clarke led with eight ground balls. The Panthers won 15-of-20 faceoffs, with freshman John Sommerall going 12-of-16.

Junior Andrew Huffman played the entire game in goal, recording 13 saves.

The Panthers open their home schedule this Wednesday, Feb. 22, against Huntingdon College at 6:30 p.m. in Panther Stadium.
