Men's Lacrosse opens conference play with 16-8 win over Millsaps

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--Led by seniors Matt Ivie and Brennan Ott with four goals each, the Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating Millsaps, 16-8, Tuesday evening at home in Panther Stadium.

The Panthers move to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the Southern Athletic Association, while the Majors fall to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in league play.

BSC opened the game on a 5-0 run, scoring three in the first quarter and then two to open the second quarter before Millsaps got on the board. The Panthers scored three more times before the half and led 8-1 at halftime.

Scoring was even in the third quarter with each team scoring three goals to bring the score to 11-4, and Millsaps opened the fourth quarter with three straight goals to cut it to 11-7. The Panthers responded with five unanswered goals to put the game away, but gave up one last goal before time expired, winning 16-8.

Ivie and Ott led all players with four goals apiece, and senior Nicco DeRosa led with two assists. Ott was also impressive with 19 ground balls, winning 18-of-23 face-offs.

Senior Andrew Huffman played the first half in goal and made two saves, and sophomore Conor Perine came in for the last 30 minutes, recording three saves while facing 10 shots.

The Panthers out shot the Majors 53-22 and held a 56-39 ground ball advantage.  BSC converted 16-of-18 clears.

BSC remains at home to host Kean on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
