BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team opened its 2014 season Friday afternoon, falling to perennial power Colorado College 16-4 on Battle Field in Panther Stadium.

It was also the season opener for the Tigers, who move to 1-0.

BSC scored the first two goals of the game, the first from sophomore Evan Lalande and the second by freshman McHale Schneider off an assist from freshman Matt Musser. Both goals were man-up and scored in the first seven minutes of the first period.

CC's Sayre Thomas found the back of the net twice in a row after that, though, including one man-down goal, and the score was tied 2-2 after the first period.

The Tigers proceeded to score the next 13 straight goals—four in the second period to lead 6-2 at the half, seven in the third quarter, and then the first two of the fourth quarter—to go up 15-2 with 11:13 left in the game.

BSC was able to score twice in a row after that with a goal by junior Mike VanSickle (assisted by senior Brad Cooper) and one from sophomore Austin Hafdell (assisted by senior Peter Raffanti) to bring the score to 15-4.

The Tigers put one more on the board at the 1:17 mark to wrap up the scoring.

Sophomore Luke Herline led BSC with six of its 28 shots; two of those were on-goal. Freshman A.J. Clarke led the defense with four of the team's 25 ground balls and three of its 10 caused turnovers.

Stephen Petersilge led the Tigers with four goals and seven shots (six on goal). Thomas led with an impressive 12 ground balls.

Junior Conor Perine started in goal for BSC and played three quarters, recording seven saves. Freshman Hank Harris came in for the fourth quarter and made two saves.

Ryan Goodall and Zach Steedman split time in goal for CC, combining for six saves.

The Tigers won 16-of-23 face-offs, all of those won by Thomas who was 16-of-19. Freshman Thomas Grove led the Panthers going 4-of-7 on face-offs.

BSC is on the road this week to face Huntingdon in Montgomery in a game that was originally scheduled for Feb. 12 but was postponed due to winter weather last week. The Panthers and the Hawks will face off at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19.
