BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—On a rainy Senior Day at Battle Field in Panther Stadium, the Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team capped off its regular season home slate with a 15-6 victory against Methodist University.
The Panthers, who defeated Hendrix in Conway, Ark., just 24 hours prior to today's game, move to 7-6, while the Monarchs, a first-year program, fall to 3-7.
BSC jumped out to a 4-0 lead within the first 10 minutes of the game before Methodist got on the board at the end of the first quarter. The Panthers then out-scored the Monarchs 6-1 in the second quarter to lead 10-2 at the half. BSC was 4-1 against Methodist in the third quarter before the Monarchs scored three goals to the Panthers' one in the fourth, cutting it to a 15-6 final.
Freshman McHale Schneider led the Panthers with four goals, and also added two assists, while sophomore Evan Lalande had three goals and four assists. Freshman Thomas Grove led all players with 10 ground balls and 12 face-off wins, and freshman A.J. Clarke had two caused turnovers. Junior goalkeeper Conor Perine recorded nine saves in the first three quarters, and freshman Hank Harris played the fourth quarter and made two saves.
BSC closes out the regular season next weekend with two road Southern Athletic Association contests, facing Berry on Friday, April 11, at 4 p.m. ET in Rome, Ga., and Sewanee on Sunday, April 13, at noon in Sewanee, Tenn. If the Panthers finish as one of the top four teams in the SAA standings, they will host a first-round quarterfinal game of the SAA Championship on Saturday, April 19. Currently BSC is tied with Berry at third with a 3-2 mark. Sewanee leads the league with a 5-0 SAA record, followed by Centre, who defeated the Panthers last weekend, at 4-1.
